Why diagnose before writing
Most copy processes start at the brief and jump straight to the draft. With AI, that gets worse: the model writes fast and well, but it writes for an average reader who does not exist. Tier 0 adds a layer before that, which defines who the page is for before deciding what it says.
What the diagnosis measures
- Awareness. Where the reader stands, from someone who does not yet know they have the problem to someone who already knows the offer. The scale is Eugene Schwartz's.
- Sophistication. How many similar promises the reader has already heard, on a scale of 1 to 5. The higher it is, the less a direct promise works.
- Type of opening. With both measures, the system chooses how the page starts: with the offer, the promise, the problem, a secret or a story.
- Voice of the customer. The words the audience actually uses are compared against the reader profile, so the text sounds the way they talk.
What changed in practice
In experiment #002, the diagnosis ran on the 10 pages of this portal and changed concrete decisions on 4 of them.
| Page | Diagnosis | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Links | awareness 1 · sophistication 4 | The opening moved from promise to story. The page starts with identity, not with the benefit. |
| Manifesto | awareness 3 · sophistication 5 | With maximum sophistication, the "one thing that changed everything" line was vetoed before the first draft. |
On the other two, the diagnosis changed who writes and how much room the offer takes. On a page with a single published case, the priority became proof. On the other, the ratio was set at 75% mechanism and 25% offer.
Where Tier 0 sits in the system
After the experiment, Tier 0 became a mandatory gate in COPY FORGE, the pipeline of 10 specialist copywriters from experiment #001. Choosing who writes stopped being intuitive and started coming from the diagnosis. The same result feeds the brief, the quality criteria and the voice constraints.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tier 0 only for sales copy?
The experiment applied it to offer and content pages. The principle, classifying the reader before producing, applies to any text an AI system writes for an audience.
Can it be done without AI?
Yes. The scales come from classic copywriting. AI helps apply the same criteria across many pages at once.
Why the name Tier 0?
Because it is the layer that comes before all the others. Nothing is written before it.
