171 tokens, 4 exports: a design system as living infrastructure

Hypothesis

A design system built on DTCG semantic tokens produces more visual consistency than descriptive brandbooks.

01

Hypothesis

Before, l0z4n0's design lived in brandbooks. Beautiful documents, but static. Every new page required human interpretation of the rules: colors "close to" the palette, spacing "more or less" aligned. The result was progressive visual drift.

The hypothesis: a semantic-token design system (DTCG 2025.10) with automatic exports removes interpretation and produces mechanical consistency.

02

Method

DS Forge: 3 production waves in about 4 hours.

  1. Foundation: 171 semantic tokens, each with intent, engine, OKLCH values, WCAG contrast and derivation.
  2. Composition: 253 component tokens, 14 components, 8 veto rules per module.
  3. Brand language: voice, story, imagery style and dos and don'ts. 46 rules across 9 domains.

4 exports generated automatically: CSS (693 lines), Tailwind theme (232), DTCG JSON (946) and shadcn preset (112).

03

Result

Coverage from 48% to 83% (18 of 23 modules) in one session. 648 tokens in total. 75 veto rules.

Consistency test: the social templates made afterwards used the tokens directly, without opening a brandbook. Zero color drift. Zero typographic drift. Updating one color token propagates to components, compositions and exports.

04

What changed

Brandbooks stopped being the source of truth and became reference documentation. The tokens are the truth. DS Forge became a repeatable skill: any new brand goes through the same 3-wave pipeline. This portal uses those tokens.

This is weekly.

One email a week with the densest experiments, filtered and commented. Nothing duplicated from the portal: the context that does not fit in a record.
